The annual Montrose Arts & Crafts Festival is this weekend, and I'll be there selling my wares!

June 5 & 6, Sat 10-6 and Sun 10-5:30.

More than 425 fine artists & craftsman, local farmers, live music and entertainment, a children's activity area and a huge international food court along the shady, tree-lined historic Montrose Shopping Park.

I finished another neck tie apron and put it up for sale in my etsy shop!

I've loved participating in Thing-A-Day 2010. (Thanks, Kariz!). It hasn't always been easy but it has been inspiring... and it brought me this new craft. I was desperate for something new to make one day when I came across the bag of neck ties in my studio closet.

I've loved looking at all the things different people have made as well, though I haven't taken much time to comment. Hope to see you all here again next February!

A good friend went and had a baby this morning, so my making time for the day will be short. However - I did stop at Goodwill this morning and scored big time on ties to make more aprons! There are three laid out here - one in browns, a pinky-gold, and a red/blue. I think I have a new obsession.

Progress on the tie apron! I worked on it yesterday too, but didn't get to post last night, what with my kid starting Jiu-Jitsu and then people in this house demanding dinner, plus my very urgent need to watch the Olympic women's figure skating last night.

Thing #18 - Flannel skulls

The next quilt - skulls! I sold a bunch of kid's t-shirts with these skull applique's on them at the craft fair last weekend, so thought I'd make a quilt with them as well. Somebody's bad-ass baby will love it.

This photo show just how far I've gotten with the project - skull pattern traced on flannel, ready to be ironed on to the heat bond backing. Then there will be cutting out the skulls, cutting of quilt squares, ironingon the skulls, sewing the quilt together... lots more to be done! I'm sure I'll be posting my progress with this one.

Thing #11 - Vegan Split Pea Soup

I forgot to post my thing a day the past few days, even though I MADE the thing, and photgraphed the thing...so I'm catching up on posting here.

I scooped this recipe up somewhere on the net a while back, and have made a pot of it every week since. I never was crazy about split pea soup finding it bland and pasty, but this....this is really good.

I didn't think to get a picture of the finished soup - but here's a tasty-looking image of a package of split peas, ready for the next batch.

2 tbsp olive oil
2 large onions, chopped
3 cloves garlic, chopped
1/2 teaspoon fine-grain sea salt
2 cups dried split green peas, picked over and rinsed
5 cups water
juice of 1 lemon
a few pinches of smoked paprika
more olive oil to drizzle

Add olive oil to a big pot over med-high heat. Stir in chopped onions and cook until the onions soften. Add the split peas and water. Bring to a boil, turn down the heat, and simmer for 20 minutes, or until the peas are cooked through (but still a touch al dente).

Using a large cup or mug ladle half of the soup into a bowl and set aside. Using a hand blender (or regular blender) puree the soup that is still remaining in the pot. Stir the reserved (still chunky) soup back into the puree - you should have a soup that is nicely textured. If you need to thin the soup out with more water do so a bit at a time.

Stir in the lemon juice and taste.

Add salt and more lemon juice to taste - until the flavor of the soup really pops.

Ladle into bowls or cups, and serve each drizzled with olive oil and topped with a good pinch of smoked paprika and a touch of lemon zest.

It is really good without the paprika and olive oil at the end, but it definitely ads flavor!

Thing #10 - Kid Valentines

My son and I made some Valentines for his class. Actually he played with his train set and alternately tried to cut his fingers off or sit on my head while I made them. Anyway, they got made.

The one to the far left is close to done. I cut some white card stock to the size of the Sweethearts boxes, and cut out hearts to center on each card with each child's name on it. We'll glue the little cards onto the boxes, and voila!

Thing #9 - Chicken Crap

I've been making a version of this for years, though it has evolved into a healthier dish than it was originally. We started calling it "Chicken Crap" at some point, as in, "Honey, can you make some more of that chicken crap for me to bring for lunch this week?" It is not at all crappy. What can I say. The name stuck.

Baked organic chicken breast (about 2 lbs), six cups of cooked jasmine rice, 1 chopped onion cooked until transparent, all mixed together with a can of organic coconut milk, throw in a large handful of dried cranberries, season with salt and sage......omg. DELICIOUS!

Thing #5 - More Valentines!

Made a bunch of Valentines by cutting different shapes out of paper (wrapping paper, recycled greeting cards, and some scrapbook papers) and gluing them onto a white card stock background. I had a bunch of 4" x 8" envelopes so cut the card stock to fit into those.

Also made some for my son to give to our family. For these, I cut hearts out of some watercolors my son did a few months ago, and cut his little head out of a larger photo. Added ribbon, glued it onto the paper, and then stitched it on my sewing machine.

I love this one. I used a cut-out from a Christmas card I received, made a white heart and added green ribbon. First, I attached them to the card stock backing using a glue stick so they'd stay in place to be sewn and then decided on a gold thread. I think I know who this one is for, too!

Thing #2 - A Valentine

I've been seeing some cool valentines on the craft blogs with sewn paper and wanted to try a version for my own cards this year. This is the first one I've tried. I like the way the stitching looks on the card stock. I could write personal messages in the empty shapes left by the stitching on the back of the card. Cute! I'll be playing with the design on this and hopefully getting a bunch made in time for Valentines day...in time to actually mail them for arrival by Valentines day. Betting against me might be profitable.

Recycling Greeting Cards

Today I made thank you cards out of the Christmas cards we received. We got so many pretty cards this year and I didn't want throw them out. I thought I'd use the ones with no writing on the pack of the pictures as gift tags next year, and make some thank you cards from the rest of them.

I bought a ream of card stock a few months ago. Staples cut it in half for me for less than a dollar. Each of those halves, folded, makes a card. Michael's has boxes of bright envelopes - or you can get a box of plain cards with matching envelopes there. A fine point black Sharpie, some paint pens and stickers, stencils, pretty paper, scrapbooking stuff, glue sticks, scissors. A bit of an investment at first if you don't have any of it, but far less expensive than buying cards - and people absolutely love them.

I love making my own cards. I've spent lots of time stenciling or hand-painting individual birthday cards, but they can also be done quickly - very simple ones like these are great looking and far more personal than a store-bought card. I'm going to save the cute cards we get now and find a way to recycle them!

How to Make a Halloween Wreath

I drooled over a black rose wreath at a local store for a couple of weeks. It was so much prettier than the skeleton I'd been hanging on the door for the past few years, but I didn't want to spend the 30 bucks on it. I went looking for black silk flowers to make my own, but it would have cost me more than $30 for enough silk roses.

Then at JoAnn fabrics, I came across a lush feather boa, on sale for $6 and the lightbulb went off. Wire wreath frame - another $2, and some long black cashmere pipe cleaners from Michael's for another $2-3.

I just wrapped the feather boa twice around the wire wreath frame, attaching it with the black pipe cleaners. You can add a black rat or bird to it, also securing with the pipe cleaners. Once I get the rest of our Halloween stuff out of boxes this week, I may just do that. A sprig of Holly berries from the Christmas boxes might not be a bad idea, either.

I love it. So rich and pretty, and (bwa-ha-ha) only ten bucks. I'll be sad to take it down and box it up for another year after Halloween!

Star Wars T- Shirt Dress

I came across this XL men's t-shirt and thought of my niece Jayde, who is a Star Wars fanatic.

We brainstormed over what to make out of it, and Jayde decided on a dress. It was very simple - I just cut off the sleeves, rolled the edges and hemmed them. Then I cut the sides of the shirt open, put it on Jayde to fit and pin it, and sewed 'er up!

Masterpiece - So Far

My God daughter turned 13 in June. I wanted to make her something beautiful.

I found this amazing Indian sari fabric on sale at Joann's. It was an incredible pain in the arse to work with - slippery and stretchy, both!

But the finished product is so worthwhile. The pictures don't quite do it justice. It is my most favorite thing I've ever made.

And she LOVES it!

Baby Skullz

Twin Monkeys

This was for a custom order a friend placed with me for infant quilts for her new twin nephews...

Not photography to be proud of by a long shot...taken after midnight on my studio floor, so I could email them to her before I shipped them off the next morning.

She chose the colors and fabrics and they turned out pretty cute.

Word on the street is that the new momma loved them. I'm waiting for some pictures of the babies cuddled up in them!

Cupcake Rag Quilt for Toddler Bed
48” x 60”

This large, cozy child’s quilt will be a treasured favorite for years to come. The top of the quilt is made of soft new flannel, plush terrycloth and chenille in adorable pink, cream and greens. The minkee backing is incredibly soft, in white and light green squares. “Rag” refers to the fringe and frayed edges, as opposed to a traditional quilt which has closed seams on both sides.

This hand-made quilt has fringed and frayed edges, with appliquéd cupcakes securely stitched on. The cupcakes are each decorated with a heart, circle or star. It has been washed and dried to start the fraying process, and as with any rag quilt, it will continue to fray, growing softer with every wash. This is a warm, hand-made item, though it is usable, washable and made to be loved.

Quilts I want to make when I grow up, or right now, whichever comes first.

I'm committed to this cupcake thing for a while yet, but I have a list brewing in my brains of the quilts I want to make. Better get it written down before it blows away into the ether. I want to use up the material I have as much as I can with the ideas that I have before I go designing and buying more (aside from custom orders!) I only wish I could sew as fast as I think up things to make.

1. Finish cupcake quilt.
2. Boy version - ice cream cones on blue, grey & yellow background.
3. Circus quilt - I got this huge remnant of a fabric with circus scenes and want to do a traditional, closed-seam quilt with it.
4. Flower/Poppy quilt - I got great deals on bolts of red and white flannel, and think a large quilt with a scene quilted on to a big sheet of fabric, rather than squares.... would be so pretty! Going to try it. Really need a honest-to-god quilting machine if I'm going to keep this up. Plus an embroidery machine. Hear that, birthday fairy?
5. I also have material to do a cute snuggly white/blue snowman quilt.
6. More cupcake stuff - kid's clothes, etc.
7. Also would love to do some black & white baby quilts. They are so beautiful in my mind.
8. In my head, where it exists, I call this my "Vegas Quilt". It is mostly black and white, with patterns of playing cards, pin-up girls, and the like. If it turns out that this is just something I'd fancy (meaning no-one buys it), I'm giving it to Fiona for Christmas, who will completely freak out for it.

9. But the one I'm most excited about, I want to make in time for my God-daughter's birthday, for her queen bed. It is inspired by this painting:

This, I can't wait to work on!

But it will take fabric money, and time away from quilts I'm selling, so it'll wait a little while.

I'm pretty proud that I did over $400 in sales in my first month as a very part-time quilter, with minimal online promotion.

Before I started making quilts to sell, I'd only ever made one, for Colin when I was pregnant:

I'd always wanted to quilt, and both my Grandmothers were quilters. It was just one of those things that I knew I knew how to do, when I got around to doing it. And now I'm an addict.

Cuppycake progress

I was determined to make my next quilt out of leftover material I already had without needing to buy more, and I've been able to do it with this sweet little thing.This quilt should end up about 45" x 60" - perfect toddler bed size, or a topper for a twin bed. I'm brewing lots of ideas for more things to put these cupcakes on... and I want to do a series of miniature ones which I'll frame. Cupcakes are hot right now, and I'm along for the ride!

This H.B lady has good taste. She asked for a quilt as a baby shower gift based on my "Wild Things" quilt, but using green in place of tan, and with a 100% cotton chenille backing.

I love this. The real chenille is not quite as soft and silky as the polyester minkee fabric I've used as backing, but it is so nice - it rags well, the weight and feel of it is really nice, and you can't beat 100% cotton. Once I've used up the minkee stuff, I think I'll switch.

Sure does produce a ton of lint in the process, though. My vacuum cleaner and lint trap on my dryer are asking for overtime pay. Might have to raise prices before they form a union and go wild demanding all sorts of benefits.

Orange, Tan and Stripes Train Quilt

42” x 48”

This rag quilt in orange, tan, bold stripes and cute train print makes a treasured gift. “Rag” refers to the fringe and frayed edges, as opposed to a traditional quilt which has closed seams on both sides.

The quilting was done on this one in a square pattern rather than the traditional “x” quilting. The backing is an incredibly silky-soft plush deep red, making it warm and cozy, but not too bulky. I love these. The first chocolate bunny I made sold tonight and I'm a little bit sad! He's a charmer. I'm sure this little pink bunny family will go too... *sigh*. Well, I can always make more! I certainly won't get rich selling these, considering the time that goes into them, but they are just so cute. I can't seem to help it.

I'm going to finish them all tonight and post them tomorrow so I can get to working on a new pink and brown quilt I have in mind... can't wait!

Fabric Labels

I wanted labels for my quilts, but didn't want to pay the high prices I found on various websites to have them made and sent to me, so I figured out how to make my own today!

I'll be working on improving the design, but they came out pretty well and I'm happy with them for now.

Once I get all the quilts I'm working on up, and get some attention for my shop, I think I will offer to design and make labels for other sellers. I can make small quantities and do it pretty inexpensively. I'll bet there are plenty of etsy sellers who would love to have some simple labels like these for their wares!
